A character counter is a simple tool that counts the characters in a piece of text. It can also show the number of words and lines, making it easier to understand the size of your text at a glance.

How does the character counter work?

Type or paste text into the box above and the counters update instantly. Characters include spaces, while the characters-without-spaces count removes whitespace. Words are separated by whitespace, and lines are counted using actual line breaks.

Character count vs. word count

Character count measures individual characters, including spaces. Word count measures groups of text separated by whitespace. A short sentence can therefore have relatively few words but many characters.
